Madison, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers p

Madison, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers play their final non-conference game of the regular season on Sunday night, as they host the Buffalo Bulls at the Kohl Center. Buffalo has enjoyed a solid start to the season, winning seven of its first nine outings. The Bulls are in the midst of the three-game win streak, having topped the likes of Robert Morris (74-59), Drexel (80-70) and Niagara (88-62) during the run. UB has been idle since Dec. 19, and will be trying to improve to 5-2 in true road games with a victory here. Following this contest, the Bulls will play two more against non-league foes before kicking off Mid- American Conference action at Miami-Ohio on Jan. 7. Wisconsin has won 11 of its initial 12 games of the 2014-15 campaign, marking the third time under head coach Bo Ryan that the team has begun a season 11-1 or better. The Badgers, who have won 50 consecutive regular-season, non- conference games against unranked opponents, have won four in a row since suffering their lone defeat at home to Duke on Dec. 3 (78-70). UWs most recent triumph came in a 68-56 decision at California last Monday, and it will open Big Ten Conference play versus visiting Penn State on New Years Eve. This bout marks the first-ever meeting between Buffalo and Wisconsin in mens basketball. Buffalo performed well at both ends of the court in its recent win over Niagara, as the Bulls shot an even 50 percent from the field while holding the Purple Eagles to just 35.8 percent. Niagara actually shot better from 3-point range (9-of-21, .429), but UB was also on fire from distance, draining 7-of-13 tries (.538). The Bulls scored 27 points at the foul line compared to 15 for the Purple Eagles, who also turned the ball over 15 times while being battered on the boards to the tune of a 48-27 rebounding deficit. Justin Moss scored 24 points, Shannon Evans had 20, Jarryn Skeete 17 and Xavier Ford 11 for Buffalo in the winning effort. The Bulls are scoring 72.4 ppg while permitting 65.6 ppg, and Evans paces the team with 14.8 ppg while Skeete rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.9 ppg. Lamonte Bearden is close to joining the ranks as he nets 9.0 ppg, and he has combined with Evans to dish out 85 of the teams 121 assists. Ford spearheads the teams effort on the glass with 7.1 rpg, and the Bulls are allowing the opposition to connect on only 39.7 percent of their field goal attempts, which includes a 29.0 percent showing from beyond the arc. They own narrow edges in both rebounding (+2.2) and turnovers (+1.0). Nigel Hayes recorded a double-double consisting of 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky scored 14 points apiece to help lead Wisconsin to its recent win at California. The Badgers found the bottom of the net on 43.6 percent of their total shots, which included just a 3-of-11 showing from 3-point land, but they held the Golden Bears to only 38.9 percent overall efficiency. A 17-9 edge in points at the foul line helped, as did a 39-29 advantage in rebounds. Both teams took extremely good care of the basketball, turning it over only six times each. Kaminsky continues to live up to his billing at the Big Tens preseason Player of the Year, as he is averaging 15.8 points and 7.7 caroms per contest, while Hayes turns in 12.2 points and a club-best 8.1 rebounds per game. Add in Dekkers 12.0 ppg and Traevon Jacksons 9.1 ppg and its not difficult to see why UW is putting up 74 ppg. Where the team really excels though, is at the defensive end as foes are being held to just 52.1 ppg, which ranks as the lowest yield in the Big Ten and one of the lowest in the nation. The Badgers also own favorable margins in rebounding (+8.4) and turnovers (+4.2). Yet coming off consecutive series losses at St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Los Angeles needed some sort of spark as August approaches. The Dodgers found it in the ballpark of their biggest rival, and left the Bay Area in first place following an emphatic three-game swing. http://www.cheapravensjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=authentic-tyler-ervin-jersey. After a tight first half, the Croatians took command in Reykjavik after Skulason was dismissed for a professional foul in the 51st minute, but couldnt find a way past Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson and his packed defence. Eduardo had a weak shot cleared away from near the goalline after barely a minute for Croatia, whose substitute Ivica Olic forced a fine reaction save from Halldorsson in the 55th. Scherzer tossed a three-hitter in his 179th career start for his first complete game and Victor Martinez hit his 16th homer to lead the Detroit Tigers a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.PINEHURST, N.C. -- Phil Mickelson spent five hours in the stifling heat Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2 with a lot on his mind. He was trying to sharpen his game, figure out what it will take to finally win a U.S. Open and make enough putts with his claw grip to avoid losing to a pair of players whose combined age is younger than him. This major has a reputation as the toughest test in golf. Its every bit of that for Mickelson. "I really believe that this week is testing a players entire game," Mickelson said. "Because it forces you to make good decisions, to choose the right club off the tee, hit solid iron shots into the green and utilize your short game to save strokes. Its just a wonderful test ... the best test Ive seen to identify the best player." His definition of Pinehurst and its rugged, natural look would seem to require every ounce of concentration. And that could be his biggest challenge. On the golf course, Mickelson is trying to ignore the enormous expectations on him this week. He holds the worst kind of U.S. Open record with six runner-up finishes. He needs this major to complete the career Grand Slam. And hes a sentimental favourite at Pinehurst No. 2, where in 1999 he played the entire week knowing his wife was on the verge of delivering their first child. Payne Stewart made a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to beat him by one shot. Amanda Mickelson was born the next day. Stewart died in a plane crash four months later. "Payne and I had this moment where we talked about fatherhood, but he also talked about winning future U.S. Opens," Mickelson said. "Although I havent won one yet, Im still fighting hard, and this would be a great place to break through and do it. The flip side is that I tend to do well when its least expected. "I dont want to put the pressure on that this is the only week that Ill have a chance," he said. "I think Ill have a number of great opportunities in the future years. But this is certainly as good a chance as Ill have." Off the course, Mickelson has made headlines that threaten his clean image. He was linked two weeks ago to an insider trading investigation involving activist investor Carl Icahn and Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters over some timely trades of Clorox stock three years ago. FBI agents even came to the golf course to try to interview Mickelson. He referred them to his attorney, said he had done "absolutely nothing wrong" and that "Im not going to walk around any other way." It would seem to be a major distractionn for Mickelson.dddddddddddd Even though he hasnt won in nearly a year, and he has dropped to No. 11 in the world ranking, he is the centre of attention in the sand hills of North Carolina -- especially with Tiger Woods still out of the game while recovering from back surgery. Then again, it could be to Mickelsons advantage to be at a place such as Pinehurst. The course doesnt allow anyone to think about anything but the next shot. "We have so many players when they have a lot of stuff swirling around them that use that four or five hours on the golf course as a sanctuary," two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North said. "You can focus sometimes even better, which sound crazy, but its your place where no one can get to you. The phone cant ring. No one can ask you questions about whatever it is. And you get out there and find your little space. And sometimes that creates a situation where a guy can play exceptionally well." The investigation has not been a big topic since Mickelson said repeatedly at the Memorial that he had done nothing wrong, was co-operating and would not talk about it until it was resolved. There were no direct questions at his news conference Tuesday, only veiled references to coping with off-course distractions. Barclays, one of his biggest sponsors, declined to comment on Mickelson. KPMG, another major sponsor, said in a statement, "We have had a very strong relationship with Phil for a number of years, and we fully expect it to continue. We have great respect for him." While Mickelsons U.S. Open record is loaded with disappointment, he sees only opportunity. To have been the runner-up six times -- not to mention other U.S. Opens where he had a chance to win in the final hour -- means he must be doing something right. And he hasnt lost his sense of humour. "I feel as good about my game as I have all year," Mickelson said, pausing before he added, "Thats not staying a lot because I havent played well all year." He also said an analysis of his close calls in the U.S. Open revealed that it rained during the week in five of those second-place finishes. "So Im pulling for rain," he said. As for that other match? Mickelson carried the load as he and Rickie Fowler rallied from 3 down to tie the match, only for 20-year-old Jordan Spieth to make a 20-foot birdie on the 17th, and 21-year-old Justin Thomas to drill a tee shot on the 18th hole to set up a par for the win. Another close call. Its a U.S. Open. Mickelson should be used to that by now.
